The wavelength of fiber lasers is 0.06 microns. This difference is 10 times smaller than the wavelength of CO2 lasers. A fiber laser beam produces a wavelength of 1.06 microns, which is 10 percent smaller than that of a CO2 light source. However, a CO2 light source is much more likely be absorbed by reflective materials. Fiber laser cutting machines have the ability to cut brass, copper, or other reflective materials. Note that CO2 laser light that reflects off the material could not only damage the machine's optical system, but also the entire beam pathway. This risk is eliminated when the beam path is made of fiber-optic cable.

Some things are difficult to see until you have a closer look at the fiber laser operating. Fiber lasers have a larger power density than CO2 laser beams because their beam diameter is typically one-third that of CO2 beams. This allows fiber to cut more quickly and also allows it pierce better. This allows the fiber to cut intricate shapes with sharp edges and leaves a smaller beam size. Imagine that a fiber can cut the company logo from a tube with spacing of 0.035 in between its letters; a CO2 laser is incapable of doing this.

What can you do to compensate? You will traditionally touch your face with a sensor to mark the contact point. The tube is then turned and touched on the other side. This gives the control an indication of how bent the tube is. This is a reliable method that can guarantee the through-holes are working for the application. However, this method reduces the ability to deliver extremely high tolerances for each rotation of the tube.
